School Days
While in China LanLan has been attending school for the past 2 years and had almost completed Kindergarten. But being that it was all in Chinese and for New York law she is too young for 1st grade, we have decided to send her to Kindergarten this year. She is doing well but I feel that it is a little easy for her and she might be a bit bored. I asked her one day: "Is Kindergarten hard or easy?"
"It's easy . . . . and hard."
"Oh really, what's hard about it?" I asked.
"Raising my hand."

Tears
Recently we have left our home of the past 4 years, the only home that my daughter has known. The move has been good but very hard. We find ourselves filled with sadness at just random times. It could be anything that sparks a memory and we are feeling sad about our far away home and friends. LanLan has done amazing through the whole transition and I am so proud of her! She is adjusting to English school and making friends quickly. Occasionally though we will find her sitting, crying. We would ask her what's wrong and she would reply that she was missing her friends in China, or her house in China or her room.
One day she was playing and came upstairs to find me. Her face was red and wet from crying and I asked her what was wrong, she said "I miss my friends!". I hugged her and said that I miss my friends as well. As I was hugging her I felt that her dress was soaking wet! I asked her: "Why is your dress so wet?"
LanLan replied: "It's from the wetness from my eyes!"

Coffee with your picture?
LanLan went out with daddy this afternoon. While they were out they took pictures to remember their time (and because she loves to cheese for the camera). After taking the picture daddy said he was going to upload them to facebook so mommy could see.
On their way home they took a few more pictures and LanLan said: "Daddy, send them to Starbucks!"
Daddy: "Huh?"
LL: "You know, so mommy can see them."

Little Fingers, Little Work
Lan Lan received this kit for her fifth birthday from a friend. Looking at it I thought there would be no way that she would be able to do it by herself or that she would have the attention span to work on it long enough to get anything done. But being the crafty person she is she was very interested in at least trying so, I sat down with her the other day and taught her how to do it.There is a lot of work involved in doing this project, there is a pattern to follow that reminds me of counted cross-stitch. This pattern consists of little blocks representing different pegs either 1, 2, 3 or 4 pegs long. Once you determine the length of the peg to use, and find the location you poke it into the peg board. After hours of pegging what do we have . . . Snow White's face!! She is just about 1/4 of the way down with this project. In the end it will be Snow White & Ariel standing next to each other.
Just like in counted cross stitch it can be easy to lose your place so I taught Lan Lan to highlight the places she has finished. She is doing an amazing job! I'm so proud of her, this is a lot of work but she sits there, works hard, is diligent and gets the job done. There have been a few times that I have had to go back and fix mistakes (and they weren't all hers). But I think she is learning a lot from this little birthday present. I can't wait to see the finished product
